What is a kundali?
A kundali is a Vedic birth chart calculated from your date, exact time, and place of birth. It maps planetary positions, houses, and timing cycles called dashas; KundaliTalk explains these in plain English and lets you ask follow-up questions.
India meets the West
In India and among NRIs, people say kundali or kundli (often janam kundali for the birth chart). In the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, the same idea is usually called a birth chart or natal chart. KundaliTalk uses Vedic depth with plain-English bridges so both audiences feel at home.
Your chart is not a verdict. It is a map of patterns and timing themes — useful when a coach helps you turn them into practical next steps.
What a kundali contains
At minimum, a useful kundali includes the lagna (rising sign), planetary positions in signs and houses, and a dasha timeline. Together those pieces answer different questions: who you are becoming, where life themes concentrate, and which season of life you are in.
- Planets — significators for mind, drive, relationships, structure, expansion, and more.
- Houses — twelve life areas (self, resources, partnership, career, and so on) counted from the rising sign.
- Dashas — timed life chapters that color how those themes show up now.
Kundali vs birth chart vs natal chart
For everyday conversation, these phrases point at the same idea: a chart of the sky at birth. The important difference is system. Many Western apps use the tropical zodiac; Vedic practice typically uses the sidereal zodiac and dasha timing. That is why your “sign” can differ between apps — and why KundaliTalk says Vedic birth chart when speaking to Western audiences.

How accurate does birth time need to be?
Exact birth time improves lagna and house accuracy — the parts that answer “where in life does this show up?” Planet-in-sign themes can still be useful with an approximate time, but we will tell you what becomes less certain. If your birth time is unknown, start anyway and treat house-based claims cautiously.
